Aromatic Wood Durability in Humid Climates: What Changes and What Holds

Poland's humid winters and variable summers put interior wood under stress. This article examines how aromatic species — particularly cedar and larch — respond to prolonged moisture exposure and what protective treatments are documented to extend service life.

Key Properties of Common Aromatic Species

🌳

Western Red Cedar

Thuja plicata. Lightweight and dimensionally stable. Naturally resistant to decay with a characteristic warm scent. Used for wall cladding, sauna interiors and ceiling panels.

🌿

Scots Pine

Pinus sylvestris. The most widespread conifer in Poland, widely available as structural and finishing timber. Moderately resinous, responds well to oils and waxes on interior surfaces.

🌾

European Larch

Larix decidua. Higher resin content than pine, with notably harder heartwood. Used in flooring and wall panelling where higher wear resistance is needed.
